The paper considers application of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) for new nuclear power plants in design. Probabilistic safety criteria and existing regulatory requirements are characterized. Areas of PSA applications at the pre-operational stage are considered. Information about limitations of the PSA performed at the design stage and existing methodological issues is presented.
