The article shows the relationship between criteria for setting the boundaries of the buffer zone around a nuclear power plant and airborne discharge limits of radioactive substances. The criteria established in regulatory documents are analyzed, based on compliance with which the boundaries of the buffer zone should be determined, as well as the criteria used in the establishment of discharge limits. It is shown that the establishment of airborne discharge limits and the boundaries of the buffer zone is based on the use of the same dose restrictions, which makes it possible, provided there are no negative radiation consequences of the operation of the nuclear power plant in the past, to reasonably limit the buffer zone to the site territory.
