Information security peculiarities for NPP instrumentation and control systems

The features of information security (IS) of automated process control systems (APCS) for nuclear power plants (NPP) compared to general-purpose information systems are reviewed.
The influence of the NPP automated control system management facility and possible negative consequences from the malfunction of the NPP APCS on the purpose of providing IS is determined. The most significant requirements of regulatory and technical documents, priorities of information properties provided by IS, and their impact on the design of an IS system for APCS are established. Quantitative criteria for determining the security of APCS are proposed.
The technical and organizational solutions existing in the NPP APCS that implement the requirements of IS, including the concept of deep-layered protection, design principles aimed at ensuring safety, such as redundancy, independence, diversity, resistance to single failure and failure for a common reason, are considered. The economic indicators of NPP are noted, which are affected by the implementation of IS measures.
