Since August 31, 2017 SEC NRS has become a full member of the international scientific association “Atomic Energy Research” (hereinafter to be referred as AER), which was founded in 1990 under the auspices of the KFKI Atomic Energy Research Institute (Hungary). The AER goal is scientific researches in the field of safety of light-water reactor (LWR) NPPs, most notably VVER NPPs.

AER associates more than 20 nuclear-related organizations from 9 countries, including utilities, research institutes and scientific & technical support organizations (TSOs) for the authorities in charge of safety regulation in the field of atomic energy use.

Nowadays, expert groups under the aegis of AER are working in the following areas:

  • safety analyses for reactor installations;
  • improvement and validation of multigroup nuclear cross-sections libraries;
  • simulation and modeling of VVER cores with advanced fuel compositions;
  • in-core measurements;
  • safety of SNF and RAW management, NPP decommissioning;
  • thermohydraulic computation, also using the methods of computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

SEC NRS participation in AER research projects is aimed at sharing of experience and discovery of the best practices in enhancement of NPP nuclear and radiation safety, including development and validation of computer codes, which are used for NPP safety analysis and also in frames of scientific and technical support to Rostechnadzor.
